Intelligent Drum & Bass for Space-faring Cyberpunks
Born_blpy, the artist/producer alias of Pete Orlowski. Originally from the rural Midwest, he left home to pursue a career in audio and media, seeking out the rapidly growing live and studio EDM movement. Now based in California's Bay Area, born_blpy continues to hone his productions. He actively seeks opportunities to contribute to the growth of EDM.
Born_blpy is more than an alias; it is a music concept inspired by the swiftly evolving and genre sprawling EDM scene. This two-word moniker acts as a metaphor for the uneven, paradoxical shifts throughout life, reflecting a journey of nothingness to birth, separation, and ultimately inconsistency. This name encapsulates the human experience of varied routines and patterns, always breaking and reforming. Born_blpy's music explores our tendency to recognize patterns as a primary survival tool to guide us through constant changes. Born_blpy offers complete and evolving compositions exploring this concept. These compositions guide listeners through dynamic transitions that echo human experiences of growth and change.
His journey began as a fascination with 1990s Electronic Music coming from Europe and college radio. Ironically, he didn't realize how many early influencers of these sounds originated in nearby Chicago and Detroit until after he left the Midwest. Early on, he faced a crossroads: devote his focus to turntables as a DJ, or go deeper into studio gear as a producer? Investing in an outboard sampler, synth, and sequencer solidified his path forward.
The music, primarily instrumental, threads genres from techno and drum & bass to progressive and ambient. His sound draws heavy inspiration from the varied textures and of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works 2 (1994). The evolution and structures of his work are more reminiscent of Orbital's The Brown Album (1993) and Underworld's Second Toughest of the Infants (1996). Notably, born_blpy is also a nod to Underworld's 1995 techno track, "Born Slippy”. The tracks lure a listener through cycles of tension and release, transitions from empty to structured, and eager to calm. These carefully crafted sonic patterns explore personal growth and emotional journeys through sound.
More than a decade of efforts have built a catalog spanning nearly 40 original compositions and collaborations. He has performed live as one half of the progressive duo PleasureBox, in and around Chicago. He provided “structure” to his cohorts “space” in their productions. Their work culminated in a vinyl release and remix for the Heavy Rotation UK label, as well as a performance at the label's showcase during the prestigious Winter Music Conference.
The project's current focus is remastering the best of the catalog and collaborations for release, while new material is in development. The primary long-term objective is to reestablish live performances to share the musical experience directly with audiences.
